Getting a massage is a brilliant way to relax, reduce stress and generally feel a bit better about life.
If you haven’t received a massage before though, you may find yourself feeling a little anxious about what actually happens at an appointment. What should you wear? How early should you turn up? Will you be covered during the treatment? With that in mind I’ve put together some info from my FAQs page to explain a little more about what you can expect at your appointment. That way you can start to feel more relaxed before you even arrive!
What can I expect during a treatment?
On your initial visit for any therapy, the first thing I will do is carry out a full consultation. This includes some medical details to make sure the treatment is safe for you and some lifestyle questions so I can find out more about how best to help you. This takes approximately 20 minutes but can sometimes take longer if there is a lot to discuss. For subsequent treatments we will review this information which takes around 5-10 minutes.
If you are receiving an aromatherapy treatment we will then go on to select your own personalised oil blend before proceeding with the massage.
For massage or aromatherapy massage treatments you will then be asked to remove the appropriate clothing, make yourself comfortable on the massage couch and cover yourself with a towel. You will always be given complete privacy to get yourself ready for the massage. You will be covered with towels throughout the massage, with only the body part being worked on exposed. The only exception to this is Indian head massage where you usually stay seated. It’s not necessary to remove any clothing for this treatment either.
During the massage I will check with you to make sure the pressure is ok and that you are wholly comfortable. Other than that you are free to relax completely and enjoy some peace and quiet (many people fall asleep!) or if you would rather chat that’s fine too – it’s your treatment after all.
After the massage you will be given time to lie quietly for a few minutes and enjoy the relaxation. When you are ready you will be able to sit up slowly and then get dressed again. Once again you are given complete privacy here and as much time as you need.
Are your treatments suitable for everyone?
The therapies I use are all very safe and are generally suitable for most people. However, there are a few medical conditions that may mean a treatment is unsuitable or can only be carried out on the agreement of your GP. If you are in any doubt please contact me and I will be able to advise.
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
Some people are very clear on which therapy or treatment they want. Others need a bit more guidance. Either is absolutely fine. If you feel you would like a bit of advice or direction on what kind of treatment would benefit you the most please feel free to contact me.
How many treatments will I need?
This is a difficult question to answer as it really depends on what you want to receive treatment for and what kind of outcomes you want to achieve.
Some people choose to have an occasional treatment when they feel like they need a pick-me-up or to give themselves a bit of well-deserved pampering. Others get the most benefit from regular treatments and schedule weekly or fortnightly appointments.
As a very general rule of thumb I would recommend an initial course of 6 weekly or fortnightly treatments (check the special offers section on the prices page for some discounts on blocks of treatments) followed by monthly follow up treatments. Please feel free to contact me for more information or guidance on this.
What should I wear to an appointment?
If you’re coming for a Relaxation Therapy session then I would recommend you wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict your breathing in any way.
The massage oils I use are great for skin but not so good for clothes so if you do choose to keep any clothing on during a massage (for instance some people choose to keep a pair of leggings on during a back treatment) it’s a good idea to make sure you’re not wearing your best outfit.
You may also want to bring along an old T-shirt to get changed into after a massage just in case any oil is left on the skin.
What time should I arrive?
It’s always appreciated if you can arrive as close as possible to your appointment time although I can usually accommodate anyone who wants to arrive a few minutes early.
What happens if I can’t make my appointment?
We all lead busy lives and things can come up at any time so if you make an appointment then realise you can’t keep it all you need to do is get in touch as soon as possible to cancel or re-arrange – that way the slot is then free for other people.
I hope that gives you an idea of what to expect when you visit. If you have any other questions why not leave a comment below or contact me direct.
